A Great Review

This review comes from Raleigh, NC. Our new CD will be released Tuesday, June 8.

First, let me say that I'm not going to comment on specific lyrics because I would go on forever.  The Public Good (TPG) are absolutely amazing with lyrics/songwriting.

The first 4 songs are spot-on pop songs.  Sounds like The Popes with more years of experience, life and musical references.  Love them.  "This Is What We Want" has a little Strokes-ish at their best sound to me. "Black Ice," the third song, a lot of Pete Townsend.  I'd be fine if all the songs on the album were along those lines. BUT

Track 5 ("Hey, Solomon Grundy!") and beyond blew me away.  "Solomon" has a Kinksesque vibe.  I simply love that song.  It rocks.  In fact, while I can't point out any one example, there was also a Faces feel to the record as it went on.  Not so much in pure sound comparison, but in just kind of the raucous joy of it all.  It really comes through.

Love the instrumental ("Slow Day at Work") and "This Rising Tide."  In fact, "Tide" is great.  Sam Esquith's voice is distinctive and that arrangement is perfect to compliment it.

"Your Product Name Right Here" is brilliant.  Love the groove, love the chorus, love when it rocks and love the chatter -- hilarious.

"In Bed" reminds me of a Miracle Legion song.  It's been forever since I've listened to them but always loved them.

"My Pre-Existing Conditions" is just a flat out hit.  I can't help but think of that as part of a movie score.  Lyrics great.  Great hook (in fact it reminds me of a She and Him song that just came out, which is kind of interesting as there is no way one could have heard the other) that is infectious.  And I love the vocal build up at the end of especially the 2nd verse.

"I Saw You Walking" - love when Steve Ruppenthal goes almost falsetto.   Again, the classic sound that you two make.  A progression (not stagnant) of kind of "the band sound."  Love the chorus in it.

"I Wanna Be Clean" - This is my favorite song The Public Good or any of their iterations have ever done and that's saying a lot.  I listen to a whole lot of music, and while my opinion amounts to slightly less than nothing, that's the best song I've heard this year.  By far.  Freaking love it.  Had this cool vibe that had small parts of Luna, Velvet Underground and Pavement even, but I almost can't compare it to anything.  Home run.

"And then We Ran Out of Things to Talk About" - Perfect song to end it. Was a really nice bookend to the first song.  So straightforward that you don't need to jumble it all up with a lot of verse.

I simply love this disc and it only gets better the more I listen.  I never skip a song to get to another one (although I might go directly to a song when I first play it).  It's that good.
